Review & Description

Sony's minidisc format became a portable digital music standard before the age of MP3s. Sadly, though, minidisc lost its favor as MP3 players became ubiquitous. Sony aims to flare back up with their NetMD line, minidisc players that can also connect to your PC for transferring downloaded music.

As we ran the NetMD MZ-N1 through its paces, we were often pleasantly surprised, and sometimes downright annoyed, but mostly impressed with this pricey but versatile digital music player.

First off, you can use the optical connection cable to transfer songs directly from your stereo (CD player, DVD player, Xbox, etc.) to the NetMD. Like traditional minidiscs, the transfer takes place in real time, so a three-minute song takes three minutes to move.

With Sony's OpenMG software you can also move songs from your PC to the NetMD. But your music files must be converted to the OpenMG standard before being moved over, which slows down the transfer rate. We were able to move music at the rate of about one minute per three-minute song (although songs transferred more quickly on subsequent transfers since the conversion process had already been completed).

Ironically, Sony's NetMD Simple Burner, which allows you to transfer songs directly from your PC's CD-ROM drive to the NetMD, proved more efficient. It took us only 10 minutes to move an entire 45-minute album to the NetMD.

Unfortunately, you can officially only move tracks from minidisc to the PC that made the reverse trip: you can't load up the NetMD with songs from a CD in your stereo and then transfer them to your PC. We say "officially" because there's a workaround: connect the NetMD's headphone output to your sound card's input and then catch the music with a software mixer. Users with an advanced audio setup such as Creative Labs' Extigy can easily handle the process.

Transfer caveats aside, the NetMD is a well-designed digital music player with excellent sound output. Its mid-cord remote control, complete with backlight LCD display, clips onto your shirt and puts tools for manipulating the sound menus close at hand. And the inexpensive minidisc format means that you can load up lots of your favorite albums (at the highest compression level of LP4, a minidisc can hold almost 300 minutes of music). In addition to the rechargeable battery, you can connect a single AA battery to the NetMD to increase your play time to up to 110 hours.

It's not an inexpensive player, but its increased versatility, expansive removable media, and long battery life make it worth the extra dough. --J. Curtis

Sony's original top-of-the-line Net MD Walkman, the MZ-N1, lets you record MP3s or audio CDs directly to minidisc at up to 32x speed using a USB connection so you can transfer 80 minutes of music from PC to MD in less than three minutes. An included USB docking cradle simplifies uploads and battery charges. Now, affordable MD media can store more than five hours of music per standard 80-minute minidisc. Using the included rechargeable battery and one "AA" type battery, the player achieves up to 110 hours (more than four straight days) of continuous playback.

The MZ-N1's compact magnesium body weighs just over three ounces. Creating custom music mixes is easy with the help of the player/recorder's backlit LCD, editing remote, and three-line dot matrix display (which shows nine characters per line). And, using the convenient Jog Dial navigator, you can scroll through a disc's contents to find desired songs and groups. Just rotate the dial with one finger and push it when you're ready to make a selection.

The included software supports multiple Internet audio formats (including MP3 and WMA), which it converts to ATRAC3 format for storage on minidisc. ATRAC (Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding) is the data-compression scheme developed for minidisc, and ATRAC3--the format used by Sony's Memory Stick--offers even greater compression while maintaining near-CD quality.

The Simple Burner QuickRip CD-dubbing application facilitates fast transfer of CDs to MD--without the need to store files on a hard drive as an interim step. Simply launch the application and select the tracks you want to transfer to the player. (The actual transfer speed depends on your PC.)

You can record in standard mode for the richest sound quality or two different long-play modes for the most effective use of space. The bundled OpenMG Jukebox management software supports secure music downloads (including tracks from pressplay.com), titles tracks, and organizes playlists. As with all MD products, the MZ-N1 can record from various sources (there's a microphone input as well as a .125-inch input for either digital- or analog-audio connection) and offers flexible audio editing tools. Minidisc media is affordable, durable, and re-recordable up to a million times without degradation. Sony's ultra skip-free G-Protection technology reduces or eliminates skipping.

The player's automatic volume limiter system (AVLS) maintains an even volume level, guarding against unintended level increases and evening the output of musical passages that vary widely in level.

Other features include Jog Dial for easy operation, headphone output with volume control, Full function keyboard remote with QWERTY keyboard that simplifies the titling process, Mini Disc Recorder with microphone input & mixing and full editing capabilities that include title/divide/join/move & erase.JVC's XU-301BK combination CD/minidisc player-recorder is a recording enthusiast's dream machine. It plays back three CDs or a single minidisc, lets you brew your own custom digital recordings, and even lets you mix CD with line sources (such as the input from another CD player), CD with microphone, or line with microphone sources when recording. While the XU-301BK isn't exactly cheap, its sound quality and features are outstanding, making it an exciting component and a fine value.

The XU-301BK is CD text-compatible, reading and displaying the title and track information encoded in many newer CDs. But even with older CDs, the XU-301BK lets you input (via the front panel, or, as we prefer, via the remote control's mini keyboard) a disc's title, artist, and one of 27 preselected musical genres.

Other features include JVC's Compu Link remote operation capability, a sleep/timer, a full array of inputs and outputs (including optical-digital as well as analog-line and microphone inputs), a CD pitch control, and a sampling-rate converter to allow recording of digital audio from sources whose original sampling rates are either 32, 44.1, or 48 kHz (the standard CD sampling frequency is 44.1 kHz).

At first glance, the XU-301BK's busy front panel and remote control may seem intimidating--after all, this machine does a lot. But once you've used it for a while, the XU-301BK is actually pretty straightforward; record buttons are even highlighted in red.

Playing CDs and minidiscs with the XU-301BK is easy, and you can mix playback between them using one of three program modes or the random mode. We especially like the XU-301BK's unusual jog dial control, which lets you rapidly skip forward or back to the next track with either format--not just with minidisc.

The XU-301BK sounds great with both CD and minidisc: well-balanced, open, detailed, and natural, with excellent separation and imaging. The bottom end exerts good authority and the player sounds quite neutral, with no exaggerated sonic coloration.

Recording is also a breeze. With the press of a single button, we could record to minidisc an entire CD or the first track of each CD loaded into the player. We also enjoyed using the XU-301BK's many editing functions, which let you splice tracks, rearrange tracks, and erase any or all tracks with ease.

The XU-301BK is not CD-R/RW compatible, but chances are that if you're buying this component you've already settled on minidisc as your digital recording format of choice.

JVC has produced one of the most versatile record-playback devices we know in the XU-301BK. All of this flexibility does come at a cost, but the excellent array of features, solid construction, and one-year warranty make it well worth its price tag. --Wayne Garcia

Minidiscs are not only smaller and more convenient to record on than cassettes, they also sound much better--nearly as good as CDs. Minidiscs' recording and editing functions, in fact, are more convenient than those allowed by CD recorders, granting not only rewritability but also the ability to erase tracks as you choose (whereas with rewritable CDs it's all or nothing). Furthermore, you can rearrange your track order on minidiscs and erase stray unwanted sounds that find their way to disc (such as the drop of a phonograph cartridge before a song starts).

Features of the JVC XU-301BK include one-bit digital-to-audio and audio-to-digital converters, minidisc smart random and repeat play, a sampling-rate converter (32 kHz and 48 kHz to the standard 44.1 kHz), title memory (disc title/performer name), genre memory (27 patterns), and smart random play or continuous play across all three CDs.

The minidisc recorder lets you divide, combine, erase, move, or name tracks when creating your own custom discs. It also offers JVC's enhanced COMPU LINK control system for quick, seamless integration with other audio-video components. The unit's full-function remote control includes a keyboard for track and disc title entry.

With a high-speed 4X CD-to-MD recording process you'll get more music in a much faster time frame. Manipulate your discs using the awesome editing features such as Combine Tracks, A-B Erase, Un-Do Last Edit, and Rehearsal, or enjoy using the Name disc/ Track function to help you scan through discs to find that perfect song.Get the best of both worlds with the Sony MXD-D40 MiniDisc player/recorder and CD player. You can play MiniDiscs and CDs, record from CD to MD, or record MDs from other external sources like DAT, external CD players, and even a PC with an optional connecting kit (PCLK-MN10A). A front LCD display shows information for both the CD and MD player, including disc name, track name and number, time remaining of track playing, and remaining recordable time for the MiniDisc.

A host of features makes recording MiniDiscs simple and speedy. When recording directly from CD to MD you can use the Synchro-Recording function to import track information automatically onto the MD (if the CD contains track listings). There is also a high-speed recording feature for 4x recording speeds. Use manual recording to create your own mixes, or record from external audio equipment like a turntable, DAT, or other CD player. The Time Machine Recording function is great for recording from FM or satellite broadcasts, as it leaves a six second buffer on incoming data so you don't miss anything as you rush to hit the record button. When recording onto MD, the Smart Space feature will detect a silence between 4 and 30 seconds, and replace that space with a 3 second silence before recording continues. If a silence over 30 seconds is detected, the Auto Cut feature will stop recording entirely. A fade in/out function lets you record MDs with smooth transitions between tracks. Finally, and handful of editing features--including erase (single track/all tracks), combine, move, undo, and name tracks--give you ultimate control of your final recording.

A headphone jack on the front of the unit is convenient for listening in private, and there's a separate volume control for the headphones. Connect to other audio devices and an amplifier with analog audio and digital optical inputs, and an analog audio output.

Using a component CD recorder maintains audio quality during CD-to-CD transfers and greatly simplifies the process of generating CDs from analog sources. Deck one plays, while deck two records (either at 1x or high-speed 2x). One each optical and coaxial digital-audio input and output facilitate hookup with a CD or minidisc player/recorder and a surround receiver or integrated amplifier, while analog RCA inputs and outputs accommodate just about any audio source.

Ensuring the highest quality possible from your analog sources, the deck uses 24-bit analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters. In addition to random and repeat play, the RW-CD22 offers programmable playback so you can alter the order of the source tracks on the CD you're recording. This deck also lets you adjust the recording level in digital domain, altering the signal level of older CDs mastered too low in level and/or new CDs mastered too "hot" to blend with other material on, for instance, a compilation you're assembling.

You can feed the recorder digital-audio signals from minidisc or DAT recorded at 32 or 48 kHz sampling rates, and the RW-CD22 performs sampling-rate conversion to CD's native 44.1 kHz on the spot. A choice of auto or manual track writing lets you take the reigns to determine where the song breaks will be--or you can simply put the recorder on auto-pilot (with digital recordings) and it will duplicate the track start and end points found on your source disc.

You can record up to 80 minutes of your favorite music and songs from any number of sources on either write-once CD-R or rewritable CD-RW. In either case, you must use the slightly more expensive CD-DA (designated "music" or "audio" recordables) to compensate the record labels for perceived piracy losses.

The player/recorder comes with a 34-key, full-function remote control and a front-panel headphone jack for private listening.

The Easy Skip group-folder function helps organize songs into albums or groups. Once the music is transferred to the MZ-NE410, you can easily skip from group to group. Besides the bundled SonicStage software and SonicStage simple burner application, the MZ-NE410 includes software for creatively organizing music. MoodLogic software goes beyond typical jukebox applications, letting you compile music by mood or tempo rather than simply by artists and song titles.

MoodLogic corrects file information by identifying and retitling mislabeled tracks during ID3 tag cleaning. It also has a feature called Music Marker, which lets you "tag" music during playback. Once the device is reconnected to a PC, MoodLogic retrieves the marks, connects to the Musiclub Web site, and provides information about the song and artist and links to download new tracks, purchase CDs, or discover similar artists.

The MZ-S1 Net MiniDisc Walkman is a larger, chunkier, and heavier MD player than most, because it's a rugged sports model. It comes complete with a large latch that clips securely over the rubber-sealed disc slot, rubber covers for all the ports and socket, and a tough, wipe-clean case that won't scratch. The earbud headphones are light and unobtrusive, too, but the strap only prevents you from dropping it rather than letting you carry it easily.

You can run, jog, and shake or drop the case without interrupting the music, and all the controls are on the side, falling naturally under your thumb when you hold the player one-handed. Play, stop, fast forward, rewind, and volume are all combined in one five-way control; only pause is separate. Although the edges are a little sharp for comfort, the control makes it easy to get the track you want without looking at the player, and it's almost impossible to change the volume by accident; if you do there's an automatic volume control to stop it from getting too loud too suddenly.

You do need to look at the player to record or edit track names, but as you can only record from an external source like a CD player you're not likely to be on the move at the time. There's an optical cable in the box for digital connections but you'll need a second cable for analog sources. Alternatively, you can plug the USB cable into your PC and transfer tracks you have stored as MP3 or WMA files. You get the same choice of single-, double-, or quadruple-length recording, which puts over five hours of music on one minidisc, and you get about 50 hours play time from a single AA battery. The OpenMG JukeBox software is a little complicated because you have to check tracks in and out of your library to transfer them, but you can create multiple playlists and convert CD tracks directly. You can't transfer tracks from minidisc to MP3, though.

The Sony MZR90 is one of the smallest, lightest minidisc players with a long battery life. A pop-up mechanism softly ejects the minidisc, allowing easy insertion and removal. A 40-second shock-resistant memory stops skips from happening when you are listening to music. The laser scans ahead on the disc and stores 40 seconds of music in memory, for continuous playback.

The Sony comes with a digital cable to connect to a home digital preamplifier, CD player, DAT, or digital satellite system unit. The sampling-rate converter allows you to record minidiscs that have having different sampling frequencies, such as digital satellite systems and DAT. A digital recording-level control allows you to manually maintain a consistent recording level on your minidisc, no matter what your source. An automatic gain-control feature also prevents overload distortion.

A digital megabass sound system provides rich, deep bass tones with digital signal processing for virtually inaudible harmonic distortion. With digital synchro-recording, you can make digital copies of CDs onto a minidisc with a synchronized operation that only records once it receives the digital input signal.

You can use CD Text to record the title and songs onto the MD during recording. You can also create and modify individual track information to your own liking with personalized character input. With Sony's Name Bank, you can store up to 600 characters for easy, fast recall. The date and time stamp function automatically places a marker on each recording for future reference.

The slim, backlit LCD remote provides direct access to the minidisc player's functions. A backlit display informs you of the song title, disc title, playback status, and if the battery is on, off, or near depletion. This display is easy to see even in low light, and it has a stereo minijack for headphones on the remote.

From the optical-in, the sampling frequency is 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, and 48kHz. The frequency response is 20 to 20,000Hz (+/- 3dB), and the wow and flutter is unmeasurable. It has a DC-in, a 3-volt microphone-in, plug-in power, and an in for an optical line. The outputs include headphones, which are connected to the remote, and a stereo minijack.

The Sony MZR90 comes with an AC adapter, digital connecting cable, NiMH rechargeable battery, AA battery, carrying case, and a battery protector.

The battery life is approximately 16.5 hours of recording time and 12 hours of playback with Sony's NH-14WM NiMH rechargeable battery; four hours of recording and 16.5 hours of playback with Sony's AA alkaline battery; and 14.5 hours of recording and 29 hours of playback with Sony's NH-14WM NiMH rechargeable battery plus the Sony AA alkaline battery.
